Gookookoo & Nokomis (Owl and the Moon)

This is a hand painted Moon on a round canvas featuring a hand-beaded Great Horned Owl and real (ethically harvested) Great Horned Owl Feathers. 

The moon is painted using sugar paint to create realistic texture of craters.

The Owl is beaded using various Charlotte cut glass beads to create sparkle and shine. There are 24k gold seed beads used as well. It is edged with gold beads and backed with white vegan leather.

The Great Horned Owl feathers were gifted to the artist by a friend who rescues animals killed on the highway. No animal was harmed to create this piece.

The entire piece is finished using 24k gold leaf, which gives it an ethereal glow. Owls in Anishnaabe culture are deeply tied to Medicine People and Warriors. They are liminal beings, accessing both day and night as well as the realms of death and life. They possess deep knowledge and wisdom, representing vision, intuition, and protection.
